Innocence crucified

In Erik Ravelo's "Los Intocables," adults are the crucifixes and children are the crucified. Soldiers, priests, militia men, gangsters, stand with arms spread, faces pressed against a wall. Attached to their backs children hang, faces blurred beyond recognition. In each image, both subjects are posed to emulate Jesus on the cross, playing more so on the idea of suffering rather than divinity. Just as Jesus agonized on the cross in Christianity, so too do these children in society. Ravelo plays upon the idea of ambiguity to make his subjects universal. The lack of both subject's faces suggest that the evils represented in each photograph speak of the misfortunes of many, rather than a singular being. "Los Intocables" represents the right all young people have to childhood and the negative influence adult actions may have on such innocence.
