Suspended over the piazza of the K21 Standehaus Museum in Dusseldorf, Germany is an enormous, mesh web. Created by Argentinian artist Tomas Saraceno, the three level web, titled In Orbit, is open to museum visitors to peruse on their own accord. Though there are limitations--only ten guests twelve-years-old and over allowed at a time, sturdy shoes are required--visitors are encouraged to take to their time within the massive installation. They are given helpful tips and instructions, however, on how to scale the webbing and tricky PVC balloons, though for the most part visitors must coordinate their activities alone based upon vibration. Therefor, they perceive space and one another's presence on the web through feeling--just as spiders do.
Saracenco studied a variety of spiders' web-making process to gain inspiration of this work. It took Saracenco, a group of architects, a team of engineers, and a handful of biologists over three years to compose, refine, and construct the public web. (via My Modern Met)
