Romare Bearden was a prominent African-American artist and writer. He worked in collage and oils, creating pieces reminiscent of places he once lived. Cultural rituals, brothels, and jazz were often integrated in to his highly abstract work. After his death in 1988 (at the age of 76), the Romare Bearden Foundation was created, "to preserve and perpetuate the legacy of this preeminent American artist."
