Vee Speers's "Birthday Party" is confrontational to say the least. One is immediately bombarded with images of children in costume whom stare at the viewer with a candid concentration, as if demanding attention. The series brings to mind nostalgic memories of our own costumed games as children, though the utter intensity of the photographs is unsettling, if not eerie. There is an underlying theme of violence and conflict caught within the seemingly innocent stares of children and their playful outfits.
