Hong Yi (aka Red) creates paintings with anything but the traditional paintbrush. Instead, the artist chooses to work with food, natural dyes, socks (above), and a variety of other unconventional objects to create unique portraiture. It is always refreshing to find an artist who allows her process--and choices of medium--to become the central focus of their work. Though concept is an important element to the act of art making, material remains just as crucial, though it is often overlooked or neglected.
