For decades in wooded areas across the UK, people have meticulously hammered small coins into trees. Most of these "money trees" appear to be around Cumbria and Portmeirion. Apparently, the practice may be traced back to the early 1700s in Scotland, when the ill stuck florins into bark believing the trees would heal their ailments.
