For those of you who don't know, today is the late Bob Ross's birthday (1942-1995). He would have turned 70 years old. Ross is most well known for his TV show, The Joy of Painting, which ran on PBS for more than a decade. Since then, he has become a pop icon, his show a source of pure nostalgia for many.
To be honest, all I want to do when I'm sick is watch reruns of The Joy of Painting. There's something comforting, if not healing, about Ross's classic 'fro and trademark phrases. If life you gets you down, you can always count on Bob Ross to pick you back up again. His optimism was always there to comfort you. Take for instance, "We don't make mistakes, we just have happy accidents," or " There's nothing wrong with having a tree as a friend," or my personal favorite " You can do anything you want to do. This is your world." Sure, Ross was talking about painting when he was dishing out these gems of advice, but it's nice to think that these quotes were made just for the viewer, to make life a little easier. It is as if Bob Ross knew exactly what you needed to hear, and there he was, waiting on PBS to give you a little encouragement and a couple of painting tips, too.
So here's a post dedicated to Bob Ross and his paintings and his quotes to say thanks, Bob, for being there. In his words, "We're gonna make some big decisions in our little world," and damn if it wasn't nice to have Bob Ross there to guide us through it.
Below, are a few of Ross's landscape paintings, as well as a couple of clips from his show and a silly remix of The Joy of Painting, which features many of Ross's heartwarming quotes. (The remix is a perfect pick-me-up video for a bad day!)
