Guillaume Herbaut photographed the Asgarda women, a cult of young ladies likened to the
fabled Amazons. According to Planet Magazine, women in the Ukraine are often victims of sexual
trafficking and oppression. In response to this, the Asgarda seek total autonomy from
the male gender, taking to the Carpathian Mountains. The tribe is 150
women strong. The ladies train in martial arts and learn various life skills in the
mountains. Very few photos have been taken of the women. Herbaut himself documented
these moments back in 2004 during the Orange Revolution. These are very
intriguing, telling photographs of a relatively unknown culture. For more info
on the Asgarda, as well as Herbaut’s experience photographing them, view the
original article here. (via Planet)
