Jason deCaires Taylor's Underwater Sculpture

By now, everyone has seen the collection of lifesize human sculptures in the middle of the sea. Though the images have been circulating around the web, and the pieces seem popular, the creator of such works is less well-known. Jason deCaires Taylor is the mastermind behind pieces like "Vicissitudes" (above) and "La EvoluciĆ³n Silenciosa" ("The Silent Evolution") (below). Though the images are beautiful, they surely can't do these sculptures justice. I can't imagine how powerful these works must be in person. Once can see Taylor's sculptures up close and personal in the Museum of Underwater Modern Art in Cancun, Mexico.

  1. In the year or so that he's had these sculptures underwater, Mr. Taylor has been updating his photographs to show the algae, sponge, and all-around aquatic flora and they grown to be something exquisite. Some even grow to the shape of having hair and certain human features that may even, on a deeper level, reveal a common biological growth amongst species that once shared a genus at one time. Very interesting. Here are some of the updated photos if your inclined to seeing the progress nature has made:
